St.Olav Hotel Overview

Look, I’ll be honest – when I first walked into St.Olav Hotel, I wasn’t expecting much from a 4-star place with a 7.6 rating. But you know what? Sometimes those mid-range spots surprise you in the best ways, and this one actually grew on me pretty quickly.

The lobby has that classic Norwegian hotel vibe – think clean lines, blonde wood everywhere, and those impossibly comfortable chairs that make you want to just sit there with a coffee for way too long. I mean, the whole place feels authentically Scandinavian without trying too hard, if that makes sense. The staff behind the front desk were genuinely helpful too, not just going through the motions like you get at some chain hotels. Check-in was smooth, though I’d recommend getting there before 9 PM if possible – they seem to run a smaller night crew.

What really won me over was how the St.Olav Hotel handles the little things that matter when you’re actually living somewhere for a few days. The rooms are honestly better than the rating suggests – sure, they’re not going to blow your mind with fancy amenities, but everything works properly (and trust me, that’s not always a given). The beds are surprisingly comfortable, and I actually slept well despite being right in town. The sound insulation is decent enough that street noise wasn’t an issue, though the walls between rooms are a bit thin – you might hear your neighbors if they’re having a particularly animated conversation. The bathrooms are compact but functional, with good water pressure and toiletries that don’t smell like industrial cleaner.

Here’s something I appreciated that most people probably don’t think about – the WiFi actually works throughout the building, even in the elevator. Small thing, but when you’re trying to coordinate dinner plans or check transportation schedules, it matters. Speaking of dinner, while the hotel restaurant is fine for breakfast (solid Norwegian spread with proper coffee), you’ll want to venture out for evening meals. There are some fantastic local spots within easy walking distance, and the front desk folks know their stuff when it comes to recommendations – just ask them about places the locals actually eat.

The location is honestly one of the strongest selling points, though you won’t find me using that tired “conveniently located” phrase. You can walk to most of the main attractions without breaking a sweat, and there’s decent public transport connections if you’re planning day trips. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle in the area, but the hotel has arrangements with a nearby garage – just factor that into your budget because it’s not cheap.

Bottom line? The St.Olav Hotel is one of those solid, dependable places that does what it promises without any major drama. It’s not going to be the highlight of your trip, but it’s not going to ruin it either. For the price point, especially during peak season, it’s actually pretty reasonable value. I’d stay here again, particularly if I was planning to spend most of my time exploring rather than lounging around the hotel.
