Look, I’ve stayed in a lot of apartments around Europe, but this private apartment in Tallinn’s Kalamaja district honestly surprised me in the best way. When I first heard “Kalamaja,” I’ll admit I had to look it up – turns out it’s this incredibly hip neighborhood that locals have been quietly loving for years while tourists flock to Old Town. You know what struck me first? The walk from the ferry terminal takes maybe fifteen minutes, and you pass all these converted wooden houses that somehow survived Soviet times, now painted in these gorgeous pastels that look like someone spilled a sunset across the streets.

The apartment itself feels like staying at a friend’s place – and I mean that as the highest compliment. It’s got that lived-in comfort without being messy, you know? Three stars might sound modest, but honestly, stars don’t capture the charm here. The kitchen actually works (I made coffee every morning and cooked dinner twice), the Wi-Fi doesn’t cut out every ten minutes like some places I’ve endured, and the beds are comfortable enough that I didn’t wake up feeling like I’d been wrestling bears all night. What really got me was the neighborhood vibe – Kalamaja has this perfect balance where you’re close enough to hear the occasional tram but far enough from Raekoja plats that you’re not dodging tour groups at 7 AM. There’s this little corner shop maybe two blocks away where the owner started recognizing me by day three, and honestly, that’s when you know you’ve found a real neighborhood.

The 8.2 rating makes total sense once you spend time here – it’s not trying to be fancy, just genuinely good at what it does. Mornings are quiet (well, except for the seagulls, but that’s Tallinn for you), and evenings you can walk down to Noblessner Port in about ten minutes if you want dinner with a view. I actually discovered this great little Estonian restaurant called Sfäär nearby that I never would have found staying in the tourist zone. The only minor thing – and I’m being picky here – is that the shower pressure could be stronger, but after walking around cobblestones all day, even a gentle shower feels pretty amazing. What I keep thinking about is how this place gave me space to actually experience Tallinn like someone who lives there, not just someone passing through. You wake up, grab coffee, maybe chat with neighbors heading to work, and suddenly you’re part of the rhythm of the city instead of just observing it from the outside.
