Original Sokos Hotel Viru Overview

You know what caught me off guard about the Original Sokos Hotel Viru? It’s this massive Soviet-era tower that somehow manages to feel both imposing and welcoming at the same time. I mean, when you first see it rising up in the heart of Tallinn, you might think “oh great, another concrete communist relic” – but honestly, stepping inside completely changes that impression.

The thing is, this place has this fascinating dual personality. The building itself screams 1970s Estonia (it was actually the tallest building in the country when it opened), but the interior feels surprisingly modern and comfortable. The rooms are well-appointed for a 4-star – nothing fancy, but everything works properly, which you can’t always take for granted in this part of Europe. What I really appreciated was how quiet it stays, even though you’re literally in the middle of everything. The Old Town is just a few minutes’ walk away, and you’re right there near all the main shopping areas, but the thick walls keep most of the street noise out. The elevators are quick too, which matters when you’re staying in a 23-story building.

Here’s what makes it special though – the location is absolutely unbeatable if you want to explore both sides of Tallinn. You can walk to the medieval Old Town in one direction, or head toward the modern business district in the other. The hotel sits right at this intersection where Soviet-era Tallinn meets both the ancient and the contemporary parts of the city. Plus, and this is something you don’t always think about until you need it, there’s decent parking nearby (not always a given in European city centers). The staff actually knows the area well – I had someone give me directions to a small local restaurant that I never would have found otherwise. The breakfast is solid, nothing revolutionary but good quality and plenty of variety. My only minor complaint would be that some of the rooms feel a bit dated in terms of décor, but everything functions well and the beds are comfortable. At an 8.1 rating, it’s definitely delivering what a good 4-star should – reliable, well-located, and professionally run without breaking the bank.

Tallinn hotels provide guests with comfortable accommodations in Estonia’s tech capital, known for its perfectly preserved medieval architecture and innovative digital society.

Lovely view to Tallinn old town. breakfast was good but nothing special. Plenty of choice and food there. Coffee could be better for this class of hotel. Very good location. staff very friendly and they give you lots of information

  • Very good and comfortable bed – Tamara from Estonia (8/10)

Superior rooms are not in the main building. I have very nice view on the old town, but most rooms have view on the wall of the main building! The bed is excellent!
The breakfast was very rich but the plate could be more clean.

  • Great location and view – Pavol from Slovakia (9/10)

  • Very Good – Ingrid from Belgium (8/10)

I booked a hotel room with 2 beds with an extra bed for a child and the room was large enough to have room for 3 full size 1 pers beds and still leave room for moving around.
The room had a hardwood floor, which I always like.
I appreciate that we got a room with sea view.
Breakfast was great. It was super busy but everything was taken care of quickly, there was always enough food and no long queues. Enough choice and good quality food.
It was even possible for my mom to join the breakfast for 15 euros (which is really a steal for this breakfast).
    Staff was helpful and friendly.

  • Couple of nights in Tallinn – Alessandro from Finland (9/10)

Very good position, literally in the shopping mall Viru, and 2-3 mins walking to the old city of Tallinn. Parking is available in the shopping mall parking, for a bit less than 20 euros per day. Our family room was not too big, but enough for 2 adults and 2 kids and a dog. Beds quite comfy, there was also a desk from which you can do some remote work in case of need. WiFi was good.

  • Great. – Mari from Canada (8/10)

Great location, lovely staff, amazing view, breakfast bag for those who leave to airport too early to have breakfast at the hotel, champagne in check-in. Shampoo, lotion, etc in bathroom smelled good

  • A very comfortsble stay- perfect location close to old town& harbor – Anneli from Finland (8/10)

Perfect location, a very good breakfast and a super comfortable bed in the Superior room
