Fonnental Design Hotel Tallinn Overview

I’ll be honest – when I first stumbled upon Fonnental Design Hotel Tallinn, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from a design hotel in Estonia’s capital. But walking into this place, you immediately get why it’s earned that 8.6 rating and solid 4-star reputation. The lobby hits you with this perfect balance of Nordic minimalism and Estonian character that actually feels genuine, not like someone just threw together a Pinterest board and called it a day.

What really got me about Fonnental is how they’ve managed to create something distinctly modern without losing sight of Tallinn’s medieval soul. The rooms – and I mean this – are some of the most thoughtfully designed I’ve encountered in the Baltics. Everything from the lighting to the way they’ve positioned the furniture just works. You know what I appreciate most? The windows are properly sized, so you’re not squinting through some tiny porthole trying to catch a glimpse of the city. The beds are firm enough that you won’t feel like you’re sinking into quicksand, but soft enough that you’ll actually want to linger over morning coffee. Speaking of which, their coffee setup is surprisingly good – none of that instant nonsense you sometimes get stuck with.

The staff here really knows their stuff too. They’re not just reciting rehearsed recommendations; these folks can tell you which entrance to use for Old Town when it’s crowded with cruise ship tourists (trust me, this matters), or where to grab proper Estonian black bread without wandering into obvious tourist traps. I stayed here during shoulder season in October, and honestly, it was perfect timing – the autumn colors around Tallinn are incredible, and the hotel wasn’t packed with summer crowds. The whole vibe was relaxed but professional. One small thing that impressed me: they actually remember your name after the first day, which sounds minor but makes such a difference when you’re dealing with early morning checkouts or need restaurant recommendations after a long day exploring those cobblestone streets. If you’re looking for somewhere that captures modern Estonian hospitality without the pretension that sometimes comes with design hotels, Fonnental really delivers on that promise.

Exploring Tallinn offers visitors an unforgettable journey through Estonia’s digital heart, from its UNESCO-listed medieval old town to its innovative startup ecosystem and stunning Baltic coastline.

Reviews of Fonnental Design Hotel Tallinn

  • Raiva from Lithuania – 29 March 2025 (9/10)

Friendly staff. They gave room before check in time 🤍
    Room small, but comfortable.
Breakfast was for additional price, expensive, but nice and elegant served.

  • Yauhen from Lithuania – 24 March 2025 (9/10)

It was a small and cute place for a very reasonable price. In addition, the streets around the hotel were pleasant to return to.

What could be improved: Nothing obvious to complain about.

  • Ribaka from Latvia – 23 March 2025 (9/10)

Clean, location, comfy, nice bathroom, friendly staff

What could be improved: I didn’t like fan in bathroom

  • Brandon from United Kingdom – 21 February 2025 (9/10)

Rooms were cosy, TVs were good, showers were good, staff were so friendly and helpful and the food was amazing.

What could be improved: The English breakfast tea didn't come with milk 🙁

  • Irina from Belgium – 9 February 2025 (9/10)

    What could be improved: Nothing

  • Karita from Estonia – 8 February 2025 (9/10)

Nice and clean, well maintained and beautifully designed. Very lovely staff, especially the young man who upgraded our room free of charge. Started the holiday off on a great note.

What could be improved: Location isn't the most convenient if you use public transport or want to have a grocery store nearby.

  • Natalia from Latvia – 3 February 2025 (9/10)

This is the cutest and very cosy hotel! I felt like I was visiting relatives and felt very welcome. The staff is very friendly. The room is super clean and with a nice modern design. Everything necessary was available – I especially appreciated a make-up mirror and a shoehorn.
The location is great, near a beautiful historical park where you can visit a palace-museum.
Amazing tasty breakfast and great coffee. We will definitely visit this hotel again!

  • Andrey from Kazakhstan – 3 February 2025 (8/10)

Great location for summer season especially

What could be improved: There was no served breakfast in a restaurant of the hotel. You can choose either packed rations included into price of the room or refuse it and order meal in the restaurant at your choice for money. So breakfast was not so cheap but very tasty there.
One more remark – you should not choose a small room if you wish to stay longer than a night. They are really cramped

  • Elen from Estonia – 17 January 2025 (9/10)

  • Vladimir from France – 4 September 2024 (9/10)

    Super nice and clean room
    Very comfortable
    And very good restaurant downstairs
