Roofs of the Old Tallinn Guest House Overview
I’ll be honest – when I first heard the name Roofs of the Old Tallinn Guest House, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But walking up to this place, you immediately get why they chose it. You’re literally surrounded by those famous red-tiled medieval rooftops that make Tallinn’s Old Town look like something out of a fairy tale, and this guest house sits right in the middle of it all.
What struck me most was how they’ve managed to blend the historical setting with genuine comfort – and I mean actual comfort, not just “charming” rooms where you bump your head on low beams every five minutes. The building itself has that weathered stone character you’d expect from this part of the city, but inside it’s been thoughtfully updated. You know how some places in Old Town can feel a bit musty or cramped? This one doesn’t have that problem. The rooms actually have decent space, and honestly, the attention to detail surprised me. I’m talking about things like proper lighting for reading (rare in historic buildings) and windows that actually open properly to let in that Baltic breeze.
The location is pretty spectacular if you’re into exploring on foot. You’re within a few minutes’ walk of Toompea Hill and the castle, but here’s the thing locals know – you’re positioned on the quieter side of Old Town, so you don’t get the constant stream of tour groups that plague some of the main squares. I could hear the occasional church bell, which actually added to the atmosphere rather than being annoying. Parking is… well, it’s Old Town, so don’t expect to pull up right outside, but there are options nearby if you know where to look. Most people end up walking everywhere anyway once they’re here.
What really won me over was the breakfast situation – they serve it in this cozy room with views toward the medieval walls, and it’s not your typical continental spread. There’s local honey, proper Estonian black bread, and the coffee was surprisingly good. The staff clearly knows the area inside and out; they gave me directions to a little bakery tucked away on Pikk Street that I never would have found otherwise. That 9.5 rating makes sense when you experience that kind of local insight.
The guest house gets busy during the summer months (June through August), but I actually preferred visiting in late spring when the crowds were thinner and you could really appreciate the medieval atmosphere without feeling like you’re in a theme park. There’s something magical about stepping outside early in the morning when the cobblestones are still damp and you have those narrow streets mostly to yourself. If you’re looking for a place that captures the essence of historic Tallinn without sacrificing modern comfort – and you want to feel like you’re staying somewhere with real character rather than just another hotel – this place delivers on that promise.

Clean, cosy apartment. Easy to communicate with the owners, they were friendly and helpful. We booked the apartment about 3h before arrival in Tallinn because of a last-minute cancellation from another host, everything was easy and fast to arrange.

Couldn't have picked a better place to stay! Highly recommended!!! – Grarl from Iceland (10/10)
Perfect location, smack in the middle of old town, close to everything. Apartment is roomy with nice layout and beds are comfortable. Kitchen area is great, has everything you need, including a dishwasher, microwave, and washing machine. All utensils in good shape and everything we needed was there.
Hosts were extremely accommodating and helpful. We had asked for an early check-in when we booked which our hosts agreed to gladly. Once we arrived we found ourselves at the airport much earlier than expected. A quick message to our hosts and no problem, we could arrive earlier. Same with departure, they were kind enough to let us leave a couple of hours post check-out time, which really saved us the hassle of finding somewhere to store our luggage. Many, many thanks to Tatiana and Yuri!
Would definitely stay again and would highly recommend to anyone looking for a great place to stay in Tallinn.Exceptional – Paula from Finland (10/10)
