Rataskaevu Apartment Overview
First Impressions
Walking up to Rataskaevu Apartment on a cobblestone street in Old Town, you immediately get that “I’m staying somewhere special” feeling. This four-star property sits right in the medieval heart of Tallinn, and I mean literally — you’re surrounded by 13th-century walls and towers that look like something out of a fairy tale. The building itself has that perfect blend of historic charm and modern comfort that’s honestly pretty hard to find in this part of Europe.
Location That Actually Matters
Here’s what I love about this spot — you can walk to Tallinn’s main square in about two minutes, but you’re tucked away on a quieter street so you’re not dealing with tour groups marching past your window at 7 AM. The apartment is positioned where locals actually live and work, not just in some tourist bubble. You know those mornings when you want good coffee before the crowds arrive? There’s a little Estonian café around the corner that opens early, and the town hall pharmacy (which has been operating since 1422, if you can believe that) is practically next door.
The Space Itself
The room setup here is what really sets this place apart from typical hotel stays. You get a proper living area with original wooden beams overhead — and these aren’t fake decorative beams, they’re the real deal from centuries past. The kitchen is actually functional too, which matters when you want to grab groceries from the market and make breakfast without paying hotel prices. I particularly appreciated the tall windows that let in tons of natural light, something you don’t always get in Old Town buildings where everything was built for defense, not views.
What Makes It Work
The whole experience feels more like borrowing a friend’s place than staying in commercial accommodation. You’ve got modern amenities — good WiFi, updated bathroom, proper heating — but you’re sleeping within medieval city walls. The staff actually knows the neighborhood well enough to give you real recommendations, not just the obvious tourist spots. When I asked about parking, they didn’t just hand me a map; they walked me through the best options and explained the local parking rules that can trip up visitors.
Why Guests Love It
That 8.8 rating makes perfect sense once you’ve stayed here. Couples especially seem to get it — there’s something romantic about having your own space in such a historic setting, plus you can actually cook dinner together if you want a quiet night in. The location score of 9.9 isn’t just marketing fluff either; you really can walk everywhere that matters in Tallinn from here. Whether you’re heading to the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, browsing the medieval market, or just wandering the ramparts at sunset, everything feels accessible without being overwhelming. It’s that sweet spot where you feel like you’re living in the city rather than just visiting it.

Reviews of Rataskaevu Apartment
Good value for money – Marta from Latvia – June 21, 2025 (9/10)
The property is as seen in the pictures. Very clean and located in the old town.
The host is responsive and our stay smooth.
What could be improved: No elevator, so if you don’t travel light getting in and out with heavy luggage can be quite a challenge. We knew this beforehand so it wasn’t an issue for us.Good – Nora from Finland – April 25, 2025 (7/10)
Location is perfect, it was pretty silent and clean.
What could be improved: Water game on and off, mostly off. So dreaming of washing long hair was not possible as the water just did not run. For that reason I think it was more a joke that there was a dishwasher and a washing machine..how they could work if it was mostly impossible to wash even your hands. There were 4 of us staying two nights. On kitchen there were only 3 forks, 4 spoons and 4 knives. Making food could be a bit awkward as kitchen was lacking a bit of everything.
Downstairs bed was ok, but upstairs bed was squeaky and you can feel the springs in your back.
I think this aparment is overpriced quite roughlyExceptional – Mikko from Finland – December 9, 2024 (10/10)
Location was perfect in the old town. Also the apartment was lovely, ans quiet. Apartment just as in the pictures.
Wonderful – Alex from United Kingdom – July 15, 2024 (9/10)
The location is great and the flat itself is fantastic
What could be improved: The narrow stairs to the apartment. Very difficult to climb with heavy luggage.A two-night stay in Tallinn, visiting Old Town locations and Proto invention factory. – Janne from Finland – July 9, 2024 (10/10)
From the upper level the window view over the rooftops to Toompea was quite atmospheric. The feel of the whole apartment in the old building was mesmerizing. It also was spacious with high ceiling so there was plenty of room for a family of four. The bathroom was simply beautiful!
The location of the property could not have been better as it was easy to reach everything in the Old Town by foot. The host was very helpful and accommodating.
What could be improved: The cooking facilities could be upgraded a little. A new frying pan for example and some more utensils. The lights at the kitchen counter didn't work (cooking in the dark was not so nice).Very Good – Andris from Latvia – July 8, 2024 (8/10)
Location is ideal for visiting old town. Place is accessible via car. Flat itself is quite big for old town.
What could be improved: Coffee shop on first floor was opened up until 00:01, was not loud, but noise was hearable during quiet night. Reasonably priced parking was located 15min walk away.Wonderful – Krišs from Latvia – September 3, 2023 (9/10)
Perfect location in heart of the city.
Overall okay. – Anita from Estonia – August 4, 2023 (6/10)
The location was good.
What could be improved: The apartment was very dark and the lights did’t help much. Could use more decorations.A fine little nook. – Jaakko from Finland – June 22, 2023 (8/10)
Amazing location, a medieval building with lots of character. Great value for money!
What could be improved: Tallinn gets hot in the summer, and the bedding (duvets, mattress covers, mattresses) were more than a bit whiffy. That, coupled with some hot sewer fumes from old plumbing (not the proprietor's fault, obviously), gave a real medieval air to the whole thing 😄. The sheets on the downstairs bed had seen better days, and all bedding could use an update.Pleasant – Terry from New Zealand – March 6, 2023 (6/10)
The location was good and owner was very helpful & helped carry our luggage up the 5 flights of stairs.
What could be improved: Having read the review we were aware of issues other had .. paying by cash wasn't a problem, plenty of toilet paper, and we only stayed 1 night so managed with the limited items in the kitchen. We didn't use the upstairs bedroom.& raided a light bulb so we had sufficient light. I think other people may have not seen the pull cord to activate the lights over the cook top… The owner may consider pointing this out. Our main problem was there wasn't any hot water & we weren't able to have a shower.
