Raekoja Boutique Residence Overview
I’ll be honest – when I first walked into Raekoja Boutique Residence, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from a 3-star place in Tallinn’s Old Town. But you know what? Sometimes the best discoveries happen when you’re not overthinking the star ratings.
The thing that struck me right away was how they’ve managed to blend that medieval Tallinn charm with actually functional modern touches. I mean, you’re literally steps away from the Town Hall Square (that’s what “Raekoja” means, by the way – it’s Estonian for town hall), and honestly, the location is pretty incredible when you think about it. You can hear the cobblestones clicking under people’s feet from your window, but it’s not obnoxiously loud – more like a gentle reminder that you’re in one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval cities. The rooms have this sort of understated elegance that feels authentic rather than trying too hard. They’ve kept some of the original architectural details – exposed beams here and there, thick stone walls that actually keep things quiet – but added proper heating and decent wifi, which, let’s face it, matters when you’re traveling.
What really won me over was the attention to small details that you don’t always get at this price point. The staff genuinely knows the neighborhood and will point you toward the little courtyard cafes that tourists miss, or tell you which time of day to hit the viewing platforms when the cruise ship crowds thin out. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward – no upselling, no complicated key card systems that never work. And here’s something practical: if you’re driving, definitely ask about parking ahead of time because, well, medieval streets weren’t exactly designed for cars. The breakfast situation is solid without being fancy – good local bread, proper coffee, and they source some ingredients from Estonian producers, which I appreciated. Sure, it’s not going to blow your mind, but it sets you up well for a day of wandering around the old city walls or exploring Kadriorg Palace.
The 8.1 rating honestly feels about right – this isn’t luxury, but it’s thoughtfully done and the kind of place where you feel like you’re staying somewhere with character rather than just another generic hotel room. What sealed the deal for me was realizing I could walk to practically everything worth seeing in the Old Town within ten minutes, grab dinner at some fantastic restaurants (seriously, Tallinn’s food scene is way better than people expect), and come back to a comfortable base that feels connected to the city’s story. It’s the sort of place I’d recommend to friends who want to experience authentic Tallinn without paying premium prices for unnecessary bells and whistles.
Travelers should reserve a hotel in Tallinn at least two months ahead for major events like music festivals, ensuring the best rates and prime locations near historic attractions.

Kumaran from Malaysia – 28 January 2024 (8/10)
Location and surroundings. Perfect place.
What could be improved: Harder to reach by/long walk via public transport.
Apartment uses boiler style hot water system that get cold too fast (small tank perhaps).
During winter you would hardly have any hot water for shower after a person showers. Bath tub is practically useless for this reason during winter.Catherine from Australia – 14 November 2023 (7/10)
The apartment was central in the Tallinn old town centre and close to everything. The photos of the apartment did match those available online. Check-in communication was smooth and keys were available. It was great having a washing machine. Three doors to get into the apartment, made you feel very secure.
What could be improved: The apartment had very few utensils available in the kitchen. This limited what we were able to cook in the apartment, which was one of the main reasons we booked an apartment. The frying pan and pot were not suitable for the induction cooktop, and I was concerned that they may damage it, and we would be at fault. The bedroom window had no curtain, to be able to block the very bright street light directly outside the room. For light sleepers, like my husband, this made it very difficult for him to sleep.Krystian from Poland – 6 November 2023 (9/10)
Great location, cozy interior, very tidy, quiet despite location in the city center, very good contact with the owner.
What could be improved: Almost no daylight in the apartment.Ksenia from Austria – 31 July 2023 (9/10)
The location is fantastic, on the central square (or, exactly, at the side street facing central square)
Self Check-in and check-out worked out well
Newly furnished apartment, lots of amenities (washing machine, microwave, everything), good wi-fi
extra blankets, towels etc in the wardrobe if you are cold
great value for money, especially if you stay during the work week
great place to explore city
I could stay a bit longer during a check-out day – much appreciated!
What could be improved: I came with my family and specifically looked for an apartment with two separate rooms to sleep and a large table to work from home.
– the apartment is on the ground floor. The windows in the bedroom open to a very touristic street. No curtains at all, so light in the room, some noise and probably not so safe to sleep with windows completely opened. (You can open an upper part only which is a better safety-wise, which we did).
– In the living room / kitchen where I intended to sleep is no window at all, all your meals are with artificial light only. The sofa can be turned to a bed, but is pretty uncomfortable to sleep.
– The window in the bathroom / corridor can be opened – to a very small backyard in front of dump bins of a very busy restaurant. We closed it as it stank.
Small frustrating things in the room. The windows were dirty, no spare toilet paper. After the booking the office had sent me a very aggressively-sounding message about the check-in is till 17.00 ONLY and then you have to pay 10 euros extra for every hour if checking in later. After I asked to clarify, the lady was very nice, assured me that there is a self check-in with a code box. Then in the day of arrival I still didn't get codes to a key box, needed to call / message, then I got codes and check-in worked well. (But the apartment would do well to rephrase the mail they automatically send to customers).Ji from Australia – 7 July 2023 (8/10)
location was great
Anastasia from France – 21 June 2023 (9/10)
Arrival and checkin were as smooth and welcoming as possible. The best location and view you can possibly imagine of – you are right in the very heart of the medieval city, its town hall square. Stunning! It is mesmerising to look at the hustle and bustle of city life from above, sitting on wide window sills. The apartment has everything you need and even more. Sauna in the evening has added extra relaxation after wandering through many narrow and hidden streets of the old town. Restaurant Tule is right downstairs, offering yummy food with variety selection on the menu.
Sasha from Estonia – 19 June 2023 (9/10)
It was a great experience. We enjoyed the view facing the Main Square.
Everything was clean and at high standard.
Will use again in the future!
Thank you!Raul from Italy – 14 May 2023 (9/10)
Fantastic location directly on the main and most beautiful square of the city, Raekoja Plats. Amazing view!
Absolutely recommended if you want to visit the old town, by walk.

Lot of cozy restaurants nearby. Try Tule!
What could be improved: Everithing perfect!Andreia from Poland – 23 April 2023 (9/10)
