Old Town – Viru Gate Apartment
Old Town – Viru Gate Apartment
Honestly, when I first heard the name Old Town - Viru Gate Apartment, I thought it might be one of those places that tries too hard to sound historic but falls flat.
Honestly, when I first heard the name Old Town – Viru Gate Apartment, I thought it might be one of those places that tries too hard to sound historic but falls flat. Well, I was completely wrong about that assumption. This little gem sits practically in the shadow of the medieval Viru Gate – you know, those iconic twin towers that every tourist snaps a photo of – and it actually delivers on that old-world charm promise.
The location is what really gets me excited about this place. I mean, you’re literally steps away from Viru Street, which means you can stumble out your door and be wandering the cobblestones of Tallinn’s UNESCO World Heritage old town in about thirty seconds. No exaggeration there. The apartment itself has this wonderful mix of modern comfort with touches that remind you you’re sleeping in a city that’s been around since the 13th century. The walls are thick enough that you don’t hear much street noise, which is actually pretty important because Viru Street can get lively, especially during summer evenings when everyone’s out exploring. I’ve stayed in plenty of old town accommodations where you hear every conversation from the street below, so this was a pleasant surprise.
What I really appreciate is how the place doesn’t try to be something it’s not. It’s a solid 3-star spot that punches above its weight class – that 8.7 rating didn’t come from nowhere. The apartment setup means you get more space than your typical hotel room, plus there’s something nice about having a little kitchen area even if you’re planning to eat out most of the time. Sometimes you just want to make coffee without getting dressed and wandering downstairs, you know? The furnishings are comfortable without being flashy, and honestly, when you’re spending your days exploring Toompea Hill or wandering through the Christmas markets (if you’re there in winter), you mainly just want a clean, quiet place to crash. The check-in process was refreshingly straightforward too – none of that awkward fumbling around trying to find reception in some converted medieval building. One thing worth mentioning: if you’re arriving by car, definitely sort out parking ahead of time. The old town isn’t exactly designed for modern vehicles, and you’ll thank yourself later for having a plan. But if you’re coming by foot from the main square or taking public transport, the location couldn’t be better. You’re close enough to duck back for an afternoon rest between sightseeing sessions, but far enough from the main tourist crush that you feel like you’re staying somewhere with a bit of local character rather than just another generic accommodation.
