The building sits right in the heart of what locals call the “wooden houses quarter” — honestly, it’s one of those neighborhoods that feels like stepping back in time, but in the best possible way. You know what strikes me most? The way this place manages to feel both authentically Estonian and completely welcoming to travelers who don’t know a word of the language.

Kalamaja is where Tallinn gets real, if that makes sense. This isn’t the touristy Old Town (though you can walk there in about fifteen minutes) — it’s where young families push strollers past century-old wooden houses painted in blues and yellows that somehow don’t look cheesy. The Telliskivi Creative City is practically next door, which means you’ve got this amazing mix of vintage shops, craft breweries, and weekend markets. I mean, you could spend hours just wandering around here, and couples especially seem to love discovering all the hidden courtyards and street art together.

The room I stayed in had this perfect balance — modern enough that everything actually worked properly, but with enough character that you don’t feel like you’re in some generic chain hotel. The windows are generous (important during those short Baltic winter days), and honestly, the attention to detail surprised me. Little things like proper reading lights and enough outlets for all your devices — stuff that sounds boring but makes such a difference when you’re actually living there for a few days.

What Makes It Work

Here’s the thing about Fisherman’s house — it gets the fundamentals right without trying too hard to impress you. The staff actually knows the neighborhood and can point you toward that little bakery that opens early or explain which tram gets you to the ferry terminal fastest. There’s parking available, which anyone who’s driven in European city centers will appreciate. The whole place has this relaxed confidence, like they know they’re good at what they do but don’t need to shout about it.

Why Guests Love It

That 9.3 rating isn’t an accident — this place just works for people. Couples keep coming back because Kalamaja has this romantic, slightly bohemian vibe that’s hard to find in more central locations. You’re close enough to everything that matters (the Old Town, the port, decent restaurants) but far enough away that you feel like you’re experiencing actual Tallinn rather than tourist Tallinn. Plus, and this might sound small, but the neighborhood is genuinely pleasant to walk around in the evening. Safe, well-lit, with enough local life that you don’t feel like you’re in some sterile hotel district. It’s the kind of place where you end up staying an extra night just because you’re not quite ready to leave.

  Modern apartment close to the sea, and with a short walk to the old town;
  High-tech "key" system, i.e. using an app and phone bluetooth to activate/deactivate the locks), very convenient but may be troublesome for those who have not used it before;
  Clean, spacious, bright, quiet, modern, well equipped (even with an electric sauna in the bathroom!);
  Worth noting that the apartment is on the second floor without lift.
  Would definitely recommend the apartment.
  
  What could be improved: It would be helpful to send the door activation links earlier (e.g. at least 1 day in advance), as travelers may not be able to use mobile data to download the app etc.
  It would be necessary to state clearly on the description on booking.com that different prices would apply if guests want to use the second bedroom (but the host was very understandable and exempted us. We were grateful).

  A bright, spacious apartment that felt comfortable to be in. It's furnished with simple elegance. There's an airy living room with a large sofa. Plus a glazed-in balcony with furniture. We didn't do any cooking so cannot comment on the availability of kitchen stuff. But there was a sauna and a stacked washer-drier in the bath. The fact that there was detergent and conditioner available was very helpful. The apartment is in a convenient location for exploring the beach areas as well as the old town. Only a 15-20 min walk to Telliskivi. Public transport is ca 5 min away. All in all, an excellent place to stay.
  
  What could be improved: The app that was meant to allow us to enter the flat needs better instructions. Without proper instructions, we couldn't get it to work, and it took some time to get contact with the host. However, once we had contact the host came fairly quickly to open the door.
